Anchorage Alaska An All-American City

Anchorage, Alaska, recognized four times as an All-American City, is a spectacular place in which to find yourself.

Anchorage is surrounded by 6 different mountain ranges and home to 42% of the state’s population. In the summer, the Alaskan day seems endless and the lovely display of flowers, 461 flowerbeds and hanging baskets nestled in 81 sights, colors the scenery with bright hues and fresh smells as live music fills the air.

In the winter, the towns are lit up with many lights and the Northern lights brighten the sky with amazing color, most frequently greens or yellows.

There are also great ski slopes, resorts, dog sledding, ice fishing, snowmobiling, and the traditional snowshoeing to fill your days (which should be plenty considering the days are drastically shorter in the winter).

When spring comes around so does berry picking, gold panning, hiking, kayaking, flight-seeing, rafting, hunting, horseback riding, and of course you wouldn’t be in Alaska if dog sledding wasn’t in the summer too .

Anchorage is also very famous for its culture, art, and music. Each year, there are many festivals and celebrations involving the arts. Along with all of Anchorage, Alaska’s other activities; there is an indoor water park too, H2Oasis. Anchorage’s Museum of History offers a series known as ‘Movies for your Mind’ which offers classical films and fascinating documentaries.

More along the historic lines, Anchorage was discovered in 1778 by the English explorer, James Cook. In 1915, President Woodrow Wilson authorized the proper funds in order to begin and complete the construction of the Alaskan Railroad. For this project, Ship Creek Landing in Anchorage was deemed the headquarters.

Near this site a city soon developed and quickly grew to a population of over 2,000. In 1959, Alaska achieved statehood and then on March 27, 1964 the "Good Friday Earthquake" occurred- measuring 9.2 on the Richter Scale which caused hundreds of millions of dollars in structural damages.
