King Salmon Alaska - A Small but Mighty Town

King Salmon Alaska is a small town located on the north bank of the Naknek River on the Alaska Peninsula, about 15 miles upriver from Naknek.

Back when King Salmon was left undiscovered and unappreciated there were no inhabitants on the island. An eruption of Mount Katmai, on the east coast of the Peninsula, changed everything after many of the people who lived near Mount Katmai were forced to relocate from their homes and came to set up a brand new town in King Salmon.

In the 1930’s the Air Force built a silo and later an actual Air Force base in King Salmon which aided the U.S. in WW2.

Now days, things are a little more calm in King Salmon but the coziness remains strong. In nearly 80% of all the houses in King Salmon, there are 30-40 feet deep wells for water and their houses are fully plumbed.

Although the town has no state operated schools, there is an opportunity for the children to be bused 15 miles away and attend the Naknek schools. King Salmon is equipped with many health care and emergency facilities and clinics. Plus this small town has a privately owned garbage waste disposal company.

As for King Salmon, Alaska’s economy there are three main types of employment. These are through government, transportation, and fishing-related jobs. Bristol Bay in King Salmon is a premier fishing export location and receives lots of air transportation. Here in Bristol Bay, there is the largest amount of fishing of red salmon in the world. Salmon… kind of fits, don’t you think?

Although King Salmon only has a population of 442, it attracts nearly 30,000 in fishing every year. One of the best places for fishing in King Salmon is the Katmai National Park and Preserve, which includes the McNeil River State Game Sanctuary, Brooks Camp, and the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes.

The climate is mainly maritime, characterized by cool, humid, and windy weather in King Salmon, Alaska. In the summer months, you’ll have to fight the fog, but the lovely temperature is about 53 degrees. In the winter, the average is nearly 36 degrees but in some locations, you’ll have to fight icy roads and slick conditions.
